FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Pesticides
Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Division Council.

Diclofop methyl, technical is employed in the preparation of herbicidal formulations.

Diclofop methyl is the proposed common name by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
(draft English-ISO) for Methyl (RS)-2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propionate. The empirical and
structural formulae and the molecular mass are given below:

In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been given to the provisions of the Insecticides Act,
1968 and the Rules framed there under. However, this standard is subjected to the restrictions imposed under
these wherever applicable.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with the final value,
observed, or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)'. The number of significant places retained in the
rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

The material shall be in the form of a yellowish to
brown semi-solid substance. Some liquid fraction may
also be present in the container, particularly in hot
weather. It shall be free from extraneous impurities or
added modifying agent(s).

3.2 The material shall also comply with the
requirements given in Table 1.

4 PACKING

The material shall be packed in mild steel drums
pFovTcied with a LDPE liner of thickness not less than
0.062 mm. The general requirements as given in 2 of
IS 8190 (Part I) shall also be followed.

5 MARKING

5.1 The container shall bear legibly and indelibly the
following information in addition to any other
information as is required under the Insecticides Act,

1968 and Rules framed thereunder :

Name of the material;
Name and address of mamrfacturer;
Date of manufacture;
Date of expiry;
Batch number;
Net mass of the contents;
Diclofop methyl content, percent; and
Any other information required under the
Insecticide Act, 1968 and Rules framed there-
under and Standards of Weights & Measures
(Packaged Commodities) Rules, 1977.

5.2 BIS Certification Marking

The product may also be marked with the Standard
Mark.

5.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by
the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,
1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
The details of conditions under which the licence for
the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to
manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the
Bureau of Indian Standards.

7 TESTS

7.1 Tests shall be carried out by the methods referred
to in col 4 and 5 of Table 1.

7.2 Quality of Reagents

Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicals and
distilled water {see IS 1070) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE — 'Pure chemicals* shall mean chemicals that do not con-
tain impurities which affect the results of analysis.

ANNEX A

[Table \, SI No. (i)]

DETERMINATION OF DICLOFOP METHYL CONTENT

A-1 GENERAL

Diclofop methyl content is determined by High
Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
{see A-2).

A-2 HIGH PERFORMANCE
CHROMATOGRAPHY

A-2.1 Principle

LIQUID

A High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
unit with an ultra-violet (UV) detector is used for the
determination. A solution containing known mass of
diclofop methyl reference standard and solution
containing known mass of diclofop methyl sample is
injected to obtain respective peak areas. The
percentage of diclofop methyl in sample then computed
by standard relationship.

A-2.2 Apparatus

A-2.2.1 HPLC Unit

Equipped with a UV detector and a printer-plotter-
cum-integrator. The HPLC operating conditions as
suggested below can be changed in the equipment
employed, provided standardization is done :

A-2.3.4 Iso-octane — spectroscopic grade.

A-2,4 Procedure

A-2.4.1 Preparation of Reference Standard Solution

Weigh accurately 0.1 g of diclofop methyl reference
standard into a 50 ml volumetric flask, dissolve in
5 ml dichloro methane and make upto mark with
mobile phase.

Take 2 ml of above solution in 25 ml volumetric flask
and make volume upto the mark with mobile phase.
Inject 20 \i\ solution.

A-2.4.2 Preparation of Sample Solution

Weigh accurately to nearest mg to contain 0.1 g of
diclofop methyl technical into 50 ml volumetric flask.
Dissolve in 5 ml dichloromethane and make upto mark
with mobile phase.

Take 2 ml of above solution in 25 ml volumetric flask
and make volume up to the mark with mobile phase.
Inject 20 \i\ solution.
